7.2 Reflections on Peace and Inclusivity#
The juxtaposition of the white church in Yamaguchi and the ancient shrine in Izumo provoked deep reflection on religion and peace. Throughout human history, countless wars have been ignited by differences in ideology and faith, and Japan, too, has its own “dark history” of religious prohibition and persecution.
From the East-West fusion of the “Lacquerware Reliquary” to the harmonious coexistence of Christmas illuminations and Shinto Torii gates, we see how religion, under the banner of universal values, can transform conflict into harmony. The beauty of “Wa” (Harmony) that modern Japan demonstrates through religious inclusivity and cultural coexistence is truly worthy of admiration and profound contemplation.
